Scholarship.
As scholars, counselor educators are responsible for furthering the knowledge base of the field through engagement in research efforts leading to publications and presentations. They model reflective practice by considering how research findings can inform practice. Practice-based research is particularly important in applied fields such as counseling, when practitioners need to evaluate the effectiveness of services provided and monitor client outcomes. Even when best practices have been identified in the empirical literature, counselors need to consider how these can be best tailored to the localized need of the population being served in the setting. Counselor educators must educate students in the use of data-driven practice.
I fashioned my research agenda out of this pragmatic research philosophy. I enjoy conducting multiphase mixed methods studies. I am currently researching the development and implementation of evidence-based practices, along with the integration of neuroscience findings into counseling practice (see the website, http://www.n-cbt.com/). My dissertation was a large multiphase mixed methods case study, conducted over the period of 24 months on the topic of factors that helped and hindered the implementation of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for adolescents in an acute inpatient psychiatric setting. My dissertation received the 2013 American Mental Health Counselors Association dissertation research award.
Following my clinical experience and interests, I also have a particular focus on researching interventions for child and adolescent populations, and social justice and advocacy issues in counseling.
